Cleaning

  • Wash your hands before touching your piercing. Avoid touching your piercing other than for cleaning.
  • Use a saline solution to clean your piercing while it is healing. Make your own using sea salt or rock salt. Make sure the salt is NOT IODISED. Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of salt to 250ml of boiled water.
  • Invert a shot glass of warm saline solution over the piercing and soak for 5-10 minutes twice a day. If you can't use a upturned glass use clean gauze or paper towel soaked in the saline solution. Rinse with plain water afterward.
  • For tongue piercings use the salt solution as a mouthwash, hold solution inside your mouth for 1 minute.
  • While in the shower lather a pearl size drop of liquid soap to clean the jewellery and piercing. Leave the cleanser on no more than 30 seconds. Rinse thoroughly afterward. Do this only once or twice a day. There is no need to rotate the jewellery through the piercing. Dry by gently patting with paper towel.
  • Make sure your bedding is clean and changed regularly.

What Is Normal?

  • Initially: some bleeding, localised swelling, tenderness or bruising. During healing:some discolouration, itching, secretion of whitish/yellow fluid (not pus) that will form a crust on the jewellery.
  • Your piercing will heal in about six weeks, but this varies from person to person.
  • The tissue may tighten around the jewellery as it heals. Once healed: the jewellery may not move freely in the piercing- don't force it. If you fail to include your piercing as part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may occur.
  • A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, although it feels fine , the interior may still be fragile. Be patient, and keep cleaning throughout the the entire healing period.
